Organization's Purpose: We work with adults reading below a 6th grade level, others at higher levels who are unable to find help at other agencies, and families for parent-child literacy related time together. Tutoring is free, one-on-one, student-centered, goal-oriented.
Volunteer Opportunities:

Organization's Purpose: The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.
Volunteer Opportunities: Educational Task Forces: Breast Cancer Detection, Tobacco Control, Comprehensive School Health Education, Prostate Cancer, and Colorectal Cancer. Patient Service Programs: Reach to Recovery (must be a breast cancer survivor), Road to Recovery, Look Good Feel Better (must be a licensed cosmetologist) and Resources, Information and Guidance - which is working with cancer patients in the hospital and at our office.

Long term volunteer opportunities include: Office Volunteer - Work once a week for 3-4 hours in local office answering phones, greeting and assisting cancer patients, and performing light office duties. Advocacy - Work to influence public policy regarding laws and regulations relating to cancer, tobacco products, and health care services. Look Good Feel Better - Licensed cosmetologist teaches women undergoing cancer treatment how to enhance appearance using makeup and wig-styling techniques. Organization's Purpose: The American Heart Association is dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke through scientific research and educational programs. Cardiovascular diseases account for 42% of all deaths, greater than the next 7 causes of death combined. The American Heart Association is committed to reducing death and disability due to cardiovascular diseases by 25% by the year 2008.
Volunteer opportunities include participation in the Early Bird Heart Walk-on Thanksgiving morning, helping in schools with Jump Rope for Heart, staffing health fairs, and clerical assistance in the regional office.
Volunteers Opportunities:
Thanksgiving Early Bird Heart Walk: Be a Team Captain and organize a group of walkers to raise funds to finance scientific research. The Walk starts on Sat 9 AM from Dos Hombres in the Redlands, and follows the Colorado River Trail. Registration includes a Heart Walk shirt.

Health Fairs & Speaker's Bureau: Take a turn at our table, or speak before organizations about a wide variety of heart health subjects. Topics range from exercise to diet to diseases of the cardiovascular system. A brief training course readies the volunteer.
Jump Rope For Heart: Assist physical education teachers in teaching heart-healthy lifestyle to elementary school-age children. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3...Get enough exercise, eat the right foods, and stay tobacco free! Be an Advocate: Join our network of grass rooters who support heart-healthy legislation. Stop the erosion of physical education programs in our schools, and fight for no smoking initiatives in public places. Ensure that Grand Junction gets its fair share of tobacco settlement funds to finance smoking cessation and prevention programs.

Organization's Purpose: The Mission of the volunteer program, under Customer Relations Service, is to provide supplemental support through volunteerism by recruiting, orienting and assigning volunteers with other facility services.
Volunteer Opportunities: The volunteer force at the Medical Center is approximately 230 volunteers strong, with contributing hours of over 42,500 a year. Potential volunteers have an array of assignments from which to choose. Utilizing services express their interest in obtaining a volunteer to supplement and assist their staffing needs.
Volunteers are interviewed and placed in areas such as: Escort, Library, Recreation Therapy, Wards 5 and Transitional Care Unit, Vitals, Canteen, Pharmacy, and Medical Records. Organization's Purpose: Foster Grandparents work one on one with special needs children in area daycare centers, preschools and elementary schools. We have Foster Grandparents serving youth at the Grand Mesa Youth Services, R-5 Team Moms Program at R-5 High School, as well as the Regional Center and the Latimer Safe House.
Volunteer Opportunities: To become a Foster Grandparent Volunteer you must be 55 years of age or older. To receive a stipend or allowance you must be 60 years or older, and income qualify. As a stipend volunteer you must serve 20 hours a week.
Benefits include: mileage reimbursement, volunteer insurance, a meal on the day you work 4 hours, and recognition.
Van drivers are also needed. You must be 21 years of age or older, have a good driving record and current insurance.

S.O.S Program (Supporting Our Seniors): Volunteers provide services, and in return receive credits that they can use in the future for the same types of services. Volunteers can use the credits themselves or donate them to a relative, neighbor or friend. Volunteers provide services that enable elderly or disabled adults remain independent at home. Services may include friendly visits or calls, writing letters, shopping, errands, and transportation.
Volunteers can also earn credit by providing transportation for foster care children.
Grand Junction Community Homeless Shelter: Volunteers working the morning shift (6:45-8:00am) wake guests, oversee that chores are completed, make coffee and deliver linens to be cleaned. Volunteers working the evening shift (5:45 - 7:00pm) complete intake paperwork, assign chores, distribute bedding, serve dinner, and visit with the quests.
Clerical/Work Study Program: Individuals looking to gain clerical experience can apply for volunteer positions located throughout the Mesa County Department of Human Services. Experience can be gained in the areas of telephone skills, data entry, filing, work processing, mailings, organization and reliability. Those who already have clerical experience looking to volunteer their time are also welcome.

Organization's Purpose: Strong Families, Safe Kids exists to work for the prevention of child abuse in Mesa County in all its forms. To that end Strong Families, Safe Kids works on a variety of issues related to healthy parenting and family issues, including the development and implementation of new programs which serve to strengthen families.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Educational Presenter: Present information on Shaken Baby Syndrome to local schools and other locations in the community.
Fund Raiser: Collect donations of actual supplies used in various programs as well as financial contributions. Present needs to local businesses, churches and service clubs as well as assist in planning and implementation of various special events.
Family Resource Fair Assistant: Assist in preparation for annual Family Resource Fair and Blue Ribbon distribution in the month of April. Areas of need include lining up entertainment, door prizes, agencies for booths, decorations, etc.
Parent Education Trainer: Assist in development and presentation of "Fatherhood Survival Course," parenting education program for dads. Hours vary and are very flexible for all positions.
Family Volunteer Oppportunity: Walk-for-families - in November on National Family Volunteer Day.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Maintenance: Mow lawn, pull weeds, minor repairs and painting, odd jobs. 18 yrs. and older.
Visitor information: Greet visitors, answer telephone, sell interpretive materials, give out information pertaining to the Grand Mesa National Forest.
Presenters: Presentations, talks, walks, etc., on any subject pertaining to the forest, i.e. wildflowers, birds, mushrooms, plants, trees, wildlife.
Adopt-a-Lake and/or Adopt-a-Trail: A group of individuals to clean up trash around a lake shoreline or along a trail. Any age. Children under 18 years of age would need a sponsor to be with them.
Weed Control: A person to help mix and apply herbicides to noxious weeds.

Organization's Purpose: The Western Colorado Botanical Gardens purpose is to promote responsible conservation of natural resources in Western Colorado by providing educational and recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages, while offering an aesthetic setting for cultural and community events.
Volunteer Opportunities: All training is provided for volunteer positions.
Children's Library: Organize, catalog, and shelve reading materials. Assist with educational classes for adults and children.
Docents/Tour Guides:Provide tours of the Gardens and Butterfly House for patrons of all ages. Educate visitors about plants and butterflies.
Gift Shop Assistant: Assist Gift Shop Manager with customers and daily gift shop activities. Prior experience in retail and cash register is helpful.
Horticulture-Indoor and/or Outdoor: Help maintain collections - watering, weeding, planting, pruning, propagating, mulching, etc.
Office/Clerical: Assist with answering phones, data entry, mailings and general office duties
