Mission Statement: First Book is a national non-profit organization committed to giving disadvantaged children the opportunity to read and own their first books.
Volunteer Opportunities: Local Advisory Board (LAB) positions open. Members work toward funding for the purpose of purchasing new books, finding disadvantaged children through agencies to give the books to, and hosting book parties.

Mission Statement: Serving Mesa County agriculture by serving migrant and settled farm workers with compassion and respect--so that they may live and work with dignity in our community.
Volunteer Opportunities:

  1. Volunteer Coordinator: be responsible for opening and closing the Center during hours of operation. Oversee all activities that go on during that time. Keep track of the number of people who receive the services. VC needs to be a Spanish speaker.
  2. Teaching ESL: teach English in small groups.
  3. Tutoring: helping individuals in different skills (conversing in English, reading and writing in Spanish, studying for the Driver License test ...etc.)
  4. Assisting with computer activities
  5. Teaching other subject areas: health issues, parenting skills, driver's education, Spanish ...etc.
  6. Translation: translate documents; can be done at home.
  7. Help organize social activities and special events
  8. Lead Bible study, prayer groups, worship services ...etc.
  9. Provide transportation for workers and families so that they can attend CMS' activities
  10. Provide child care so that workers and families can attend CMS' activities
  11. Deliver groceries and other donations

Organization's Purpose: Foster Grandparents work one on one with special needs children in area daycare centers, preschools and elementary schools. We have Foster Grandparents serving youth at the Grand Mesa Youth Services, R-5 Team Moms Program at R-5 High School, as well as the Regional Center and the Latimer Safe House.
Volunteer Opportunities: To become a Foster Grandparent Volunteer you must be 55 years of age or older. To receive a stipend or allowance you must be 60 years or older, and income qualify. As a stipend volunteer you must serve 20 hours a week.
Benefits include: mileage reimbursement, volunteer insurance, a meal on the day you work 4 hours, and recognition.
Van drivers are also needed. You must be 21 years of age or older, have a good driving record and current insurance.

S.O.S Program (Supporting Our Seniors): Volunteers provide services, and in return receive credits that they can use in the future for the same types of services. Volunteers can use the credits themselves or donate them to a relative, neighbor or friend. Volunteers provide services that enable elderly or disabled adults remain independent at home. Services may include friendly visits or calls, writing letters, shopping, errands, and transportation.
Volunteers can also earn credit by providing transportation for foster care children.
Grand Junction Community Homeless Shelter: Volunteers working the morning shift (6:45-8:00am) wake guests, oversee that chores are completed, make coffee and deliver linens to be cleaned. Volunteers working the evening shift (5:45 - 7:00pm) complete intake paperwork, assign chores, distribute bedding, serve dinner, and visit with the quests.
Clerical/Work Study Program: Individuals looking to gain clerical experience can apply for volunteer positions located throughout the Mesa County Department of Human Services. Experience can be gained in the areas of telephone skills, data entry, filing, work processing, mailings, organization and reliability. Those who already have clerical experience looking to volunteer their time are also welcome.

Organization's Purpose: Strong Families, Safe Kids exists to work for the prevention of child abuse in Mesa County in all its forms. To that end Strong Families, Safe Kids works on a variety of issues related to healthy parenting and family issues, including the development and implementation of new programs which serve to strengthen families.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Educational Presenter: Present information on Shaken Baby Syndrome to local schools and other locations in the community.
Fund Raiser: Collect donations of actual supplies used in various programs as well as financial contributions. Present needs to local businesses, churches and service clubs as well as assist in planning and implementation of various special events.
Family Resource Fair Assistant: Assist in preparation for annual Family Resource Fair and Blue Ribbon distribution in the month of April. Areas of need include lining up entertainment, door prizes, agencies for booths, decorations, etc.
Parent Education Trainer: Assist in development and presentation of "Fatherhood Survival Course," parenting education program for dads. Hours vary and are very flexible for all positions.
Family Volunteer Oppportunity: Walk-for-families - in November on National Family Volunteer Day.

The mission of Mesa County Partners is to make a difference in the lives of young people by helping them develop a positive self image, a sense of belonging and an acceptance of responsibility for their actions.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Senior Partner: Local youth, ages 7 to 17 are matched with mentor. Just 3 hours a week of your time increases at-risk youths chances by 64% in avoiding delinquent behaviors.
Club MID After School Program: Volunteers provide a FREE after school program at District 51 middle schools, which operate five days a week, 2:45 to 5:00pm. Volunteers help with homework, lead group activities from crafts to sports, and teach special skills such as pottery, music, drama, CPR/First Aid, babysitting classes, or topics of volunteer choice, etc.
Minority Family Advocacy Program: Advocates support minority youth and their families who have become involved with the judicial system.
