Organization's Purpose: The American Heart Association is dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke through scientific research and educational programs. Cardiovascular diseases account for 42% of all deaths, greater than the next 7 causes of death combined. The American Heart Association is committed to reducing death and disability due to cardiovascular diseases by 25% by the year 2008.
Volunteer opportunities include participation in the Early Bird Heart Walk-on Thanksgiving morning, helping in schools with Jump Rope for Heart, staffing health fairs, and clerical assistance in the regional office.
Volunteers Opportunities:
Thanksgiving Early Bird Heart Walk: Be a Team Captain and organize a group of walkers to raise funds to finance scientific research. The Walk starts on Sat 9 AM from Dos Hombres in the Redlands, and follows the Colorado River Trail. Registration includes a Heart Walk shirt.
Festival of Wine and Theater: Join us at St. Kathryn Cellars on September 16, 2000. Highlights include fine wines, select hors d'oeuvres, limousine services, and live music and dancing. Assist in ticket sales or participation the organizing committee.
Health Fairs & Speaker's Bureau: Take a turn at our table, or speak before organizations about a wide variety of heart health subjects. Topics range from exercise to diet to diseases of the cardiovascular system. A brief training course readies the volunteer.
Jump Rope For Heart: Assist physical education teachers in teaching heart-healthy lifestyle to elementary school-age children. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3...Get enough exercise, eat the right foods, and stay tobacco free! Be an Advocate: Join our network of grass rooters who support heart-healthy legislation. Stop the erosion of physical education programs in our schools, and fight for no smoking initiatives in public places. Ensure that Grand Junction gets its fair share of tobacco settlement funds to finance smoking cessation and prevention programs.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Computer Donation Program: Need people with some level of computer literacy.
Recreation Program: Ranging from Winter Adaptive Ski Program, to summer river rafting and camping trips for people with disabilities.

Organization's Purpose: We are a health care facility providing medical, dental, optical, counseling, and pharmaceutical services to low-income, uninsured residents of Mesa County. We also have recently started accepting Medicaid recipients in our dental clinic.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Medical Screener: Assist medical staff with taking vital signs (blood pressure, height, weight, respiration, etc.) and patient flow in and out of exam rooms. Training provided. Medical background preferred. Commitment consists of a standing weekly time of 4 hours/week.
Receptionist: Assist front desk with patient check-in, scheduling, registration, telephone calls and medical records. Commitment consists of a standing weekly time of 4 hours/week.
Data Entry: Assist administration with input of daily patient sheets and word processing. Flexible schedule as needed. Computer experience required.
Medically Indigent Pharmaceutical Program Clerk: Process pharmaceutical applications for free medications for patients. Mature applicants only. Extensive training required. Commitment consists of a standing weekly time of 4 hours/week.
File Clerk: Assist with medical and/or dental records management. Filing, filling records requests, locating records for upcoming appointments, etc. Flexible schedule, will train.
Retired medical professionals are encouraged to call with specific interests and questions.

Organization's Purpose: The Mission of the volunteer program, under Customer Relations Service, is to provide supplemental support through volunteerism by recruiting, orienting and assigning volunteers with other facility services.
Volunteer Opportunities: The volunteer force at the Medical Center is approximately 230 volunteers strong, with contributing hours of over 42,500 a year. Potential volunteers have an array of assignments from which to choose. Utilizing services express their interest in obtaining a volunteer to supplement and assist their staffing needs.
Volunteers are interviewed and placed in areas such as: Escort, Library, Recreation Therapy, Wards 5 and Transitional Care Unit, Vitals, Canteen, Pharmacy, and Medical Records. Every attempt is made to address the personal request of the individual to ensure that their volunteer assignment is self-fulfilling and gratifying.

Organization's Purpose: MDS serves individuals with developmental disabilities in Mesa County. MDS offers several opportunities for volunteers. People with developmental disabilities enjoy a variety of community activities and opportunities to learn.
Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers may act as peer companions, recreational assistants, reading tutors, program/training assistants and volunteer advisors for a self-advocacy club. Volunteers are also utilized in clerical and office operations.
Volunteers may find permanent employment at MDS after establishing an interest and expertise in the area of developmental disabilities. Most find the warmth and appreciation of those with whom they work to be very gratifying.
